Start with jobs, not acreage

Acreage is a weak sizing shortcut. Ten open acres that only need mowing can require less tractor than three wooded acres with loader, snow, trenching and grading work.

Separate engine power from usable capacity

Engine horsepower matters, but loader lift, hydraulic flow, three-point capacity, PTO horsepower, tractor weight and wheelbase determine whether the tractor can safely perform the job.

Choose the transmission around the operator

Hydrostatic drive is intuitive for frequent direction changes, loader work and operators with mixed experience. Gear, shuttle and power-shuttle choices can be efficient for steady pulling and repeated forward-reverse work. The best answer depends on how the tractor spends its hours.

Build in stability and winter usability

Loader capacity on paper does not replace safe ballast, proper tire inflation and a stable operating surface. In Montana, cab heat, block-heater strategy, lighting, cold-weather fluids and snow-tool visibility can determine whether a tractor is useful year-round.

Price the working package

A tractor without the needed implements is an incomplete purchase. Compare the total setup, including loader, bucket, forks, ballast, mower, snow tool, tires, delivery and first service.
